Abstract

Stomach contents of 45 fish species from 17 families (Apogonidae, Belonidae, Carangidae, Cheilodactylidae, Cirrhitidae, Haemulidae, Holocentridae, Lethrinidae, Lutjanidae, Ophidiidae, Pempheridae, Pinguipedidae, Priacanthidae, Scorpaenidae, Serranidae, Synodontidae, Tripterygiidae) sampled from the coastal zone around Kuchierabu-jima Island, southern Japan, were analyzed. Of all prey items, fish and crustaceans were preyed on by 59 % and 74 % of all predators, respectively. Of the crustaceans, brachyurans were preyed on by 52 %, suggesting that in addition to fish as prey items, brachyurans are commonly preyed on by predatory fish species.
