Abstract

As reference material for the Shuowen Jiezi, we have reprints of the Song dynasty versions, but the versions printed in the Qing dynasty are still important in modern dictionary or font production. In particular, the Pingjinguan (平津館, PJG) and Tenghuaxie (藤花榭, THX) versions are respected. However, earlier text critiques have focused on the PJG version, which is regarded as having been “modified” from Wang Chang’s Song dynasty version. The THX version is sometimes regarded as better, in spite of the lack of any detailed study. This report applies the earlier studies of the PJG version to the THX version and finds that THX version is “different” from Wang Chang’s Song dynasty version.
