Studies of Roman law started in China in the latter years of the Qing Dynasty (1636-1912) and had attained a relatively high level in the Republic of China period (1912-1949). The current author conducted an investigation into Chinese publications on Roman law of the first half of the 20th century, including books, translations, articles, etc., and revealed the characteristics and purpose of those studies. Her research shows the following facts : 1) The first generation of Roman law scholars in China contains not only those who studied abroad but also those who received related education at home ; 2) Roman law studies in China had been deeply influenced by the US and Japan in the early stage but widely absorbed knowledge from European countries later ; 3) In the 1930s Chinese scholars were furnished with sufficient knowledge to academically dispute special branches of Roman law; 4) Although Roman law studies had been inspired by the Qing government for the purpose of keeping it in existence, which was definitely not achieved, the scholars duly recognized the scientific importance of Roman law and its practical value to the revolutionizing society as well as to the developing legal system of China (.
