Abstract

Which role should digitalisation play in education? This is an urgent question that every teacher is asking in times of global lockdowns. In this Educational Practice Report, pros and cons of teaching Danish as a foreign language online from a teacher’s perspective are outlined. In particular, the paper will discuss how Zoom can be used as a pedagogical and educational tool rather than merely a pragmatic tool. One of the main difficulties in teaching a foreign language through Zoom appears with pronunciation exercises. Online teaching strongly limits and challenges body language and eye contact, which are essential aspects of how we understand language. On the other hand, however, online teaching with Zoom affords a temporal and spatial independence. The ‘Breakout rooms’ function likewise presents an advantage by creating a learning space in which students can work independently or in groups according to their individual level. Effective online teaching furthermore necessitates clear and concise assignment instructions and that one thoroughly considers the possibilities for students to be actively engaged in their work. Lastly, Zoom can function as an efficient tool to give individual feedback to students’ written assignments.
