Abstract

Shema, starting from Deuteronomy 6:4, is one of the most important segment in the Old Testament. By the textual and historical context, shema has been interpreted as the opposition to polytheism or poly-yahwism. This essay is an attempt to explore the meaning of the Hebrew word 'eḥād̲(one) in shema through the co-text environment. Comparing to the literature from Ugarit it may be said that 'eḥād̲ expresses uniqueness in many (KTU1.4 VII 49b-52b), while the meaning "only" is represented more clearly by another adverb bād̲ād̲ in the biblical Hebrew. In etymology 'eḥād̲ is supposed to relate to yaḥad̲ "together" Shema is often interpreted as an expression of the relationship between YHWH and the peole of Israel by reference to Deuteronomy 6:5. Recently some scholars have considered that 'eḥād̲ in Shema describes a close relationship between God and Israel. And interestingly 'eḥād̲ may provide the integrity of YHWH on which faithfulness of the people is based .
