Abstract

Joshua 24 presents a stage in the Old Testament tradition of covenant between Israel and its God. It has been widely agreed that the assembly at Shechem reflects an old tradition of cultic as well as political contexts, but several periods of composition and redaction were suggested. This article suggests that Joshua 24 is a composition of the circle of priests, who belonged to the priestly source H, or the "School of Holiness", whose main document is Leviticus 17-26. The main reasoning for this argument is that the basis for the covenant, which is phrased in a legal language, is the holiness of YHWH. Other language features, which are characteristic of H, also support that argument. Based on the evidence it is also suggested that the origin of Joshua 24 was in the pre-exilic period.
