Abstract

The paper reports results from an EEG study in Reader Response Research. Two independent groups of subjects were confronted with a narrative, one with and one without pre-information about the plot. Based on the re-reading paradigm by Bortolussi and Dixon (Psychonarratology, Cambridge University Press, 2003) it was assumed that subjects with pre-information will show more attention during reception than readers without pre-information. Attention was operationalized both as amount and as posterior vs. frontal distribution of alpha waves in the EEG. Results confirmed the hypothesis, suggesting that, next to the plot, literary style exerts an influence on recipients' attention.
