Abstract

This article is a case study on the Dowlais Iron Co. and the Great Western Railway Co. in the 1890s, and examines some distributional problems during the advent of mass transportation of goods. First, it illustrates that the railway company frequently regulated the distribution of steam coal supplied by the iron company. Second, the railway company tried to control the delay in the delivery of coal by improving wagon allocation. Third, the number of wrong deliveries decreased drastically from the 1880s, and goods transportation was optimized.
