Contextual expansion of kore/sore in novels : focusing on the central factor of the implied contents

Abstract

In this paper I analyze the differences between the implied contents of the demonstrative pronouns kore and sore as a central factor of contextual expansion. The data is drawn from "Seibei to hyotan" ("Seibei's Gourds") and twenty other novels from Shincho Bunko. From this study I confirmed the following phenomena: Within these novels, the use of sore generally denotes specific phrases or clauses containing little information tending to comprise concrete concepts such as "object" or "operation." In contrast, kore is used to denote complex and abstract ideas that can span one or more sentences such as "situation", "aspect", or "contents of an utterance."
