Abstract

This paper discusses the intellectual activities of Ulama or Islamic religious scholars who lived in Western Asia between the 10th and 13th centuries. Among them, it focuses on specialists of the Hadith, or traditions of the words and actions of the Prophet Muhammad. The investigation of the structure, format and contents of the local biographical histories, which those Hadith scholars compiled in the various parts of Western Asia, clarifies the factors sustaining the spread of the compilation. Based on that analysis, this paper discuss the challenges and significance in considering the intellectual activities of the Ulama in connection to their social activities.
