Abstract

This study traces the "fear of God," an important concept in the Old Testament and writings of Early Judaism, as a history of reception in the Ancient Near Eastern context, the wisdom tradition, the Deuteronomic context, and later wisdom literature. Through this method, we apply the hermeneutic critical theory Rezeptionsästhetik / Reader-Response Criticism to the field of biblical studies. Through describing a history of rich "conversation" (German: Dialog, Gadamer: 1960) which past receivers had conducted between a text and themselves, this study indirectly makes space for a modern receiver. Accordingly, this study seeks a way for biblical study to help make the reading of the Bible relevant to contemporary readers.
