Abstract

This article introduces a pamphlet entitled Statement Submitted to the Kirk Session of Free St. John's, by the Ladies' Committee for Free St. John's School of Industry, which was published in 1870 in Glasgow. The historical material expresses objection against a male teacher's attempt to intervene to the School, which had been administered by a group of female congregation of Free St. John's to provide education to female parishioners. The material is significant in examining not only the situation of girls' education in contemporary Scottish society, but also the self-awareness of the affiliates of the Free Church, which was emphasizing church autonomy in terms of personnel and finance, against intervention from secular power.
