Abstract

Participation in "mass communication" has become an open-to-all process because the Internet and social network systems have enabled us to disseminate messages, to multiple unknown individuals easily. These individuals can suddenly attract huge public attention and criticism after disseminating careless messages through social network systems. This phenomenon shows that, at present, "mass communication" is functioning as a trigger through which some of the most diversified social systems composing a society can operate. A German sociologist, Niklas Luhmann, defines the word "communication" as the synthesis of three selections, these are : "information," "utterance," and "understanding." Social system starts to operate when the sequence of communication commences with the receivers understanding the information. To comprehend the functions of "mass communications" in the present context, it is essential that media sociologists examine these functions from the perspective of its relationship with the social systems.
