Description

This paper reconsiders Karl Polanyi's theory and his economic social thought in The Great Transformation by connecting two concepts, namely, the "self-regulating market" and "double movement." From his perspective, we can see that social policy, considered to be a self-protection movement of society, reinforced a creed of economic liberalism. In addition, ironically, the social defense movement made "self-regulating market" functional and effective. Therefore, both the market expansion movement and the defense movement of society are factors of the collapse of "nineteenth-century civilization." The cause of the collapse was just "double movement."
