Abstract

The movie "Gion Matsuri", the English title is "THE DAY THE SUN ROSE"(released on November 23, 1968) is a period movie that depicts the reestablishment of the Gion Matsuri Festival by Kyomachi-shu of the Muromachi period (16 century) after overcoming many difficulties. There was another story in this movie besides the ones shown. "The movie "Gion Matsuri Festival" ― the outline of the story―" is a booklet written by Daisuke Ito. In this booklet, the Kyomachi-shu (the merchant class of Kyoto) revived the Gion Matsuri Festival as a symbol of self-governing to counter obstruction by the Sanmon (Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple)and tha Muromachi Shogunate. The people's energy was taken over by the current Gion Matsuri Festival and Yamahoko Junko. The story that connects the past and the present is suitable for a project to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the Kyoto prefectural government. This booklet has not been published yet. Therefore, I would like to reprint and introduce this booklet with some notes, including a handwritten memo and a handwritten draft written by Daisuke ITO. This is a basic task to further analyze his work on the history of civic movement in postwar democracy.
