This study examined whether a two-week study abroad (SA) program in Malaysia based on the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach yields significant linguistic and non-linguistic changes for Japanese as a foreign language students. A total of 90 university students from various faculties participated in this study. Two research questions were addressed: (1) Does the study abroad program based on the CLT and English as an International Language approach change the participants’ learning attitude? and (2) Does it improve the participants’ English language proficiency? To examine the effects of this SA program, a student survey, student selfevaluations, and teacher interviews were conducted. The results showed that the SA program has the possibility to (1) change students’ learning attitude and (2) improve students’ oracy skills (listening and speaking). However, the results did not provide conclusions regarding the program’s ability to improve students’ literacy skills (reading and writing skills). The implication of the study findings are discussed in detail in the paper.
