Abstract

type:text

[ABSTRACT] This text is a Japanese translation of "Tsuishikari Ainos" and "Notes to Illustrations" by James M. Dixon (1856-1933). The author, J. M. Dixon, was a Scottish teacher at the Imperial University of Japan. The original manuscript was written in English. This paper contains his experiences of the Sakhalin Ainus' lifestyle in Tsuishikari in Hokkaido. Tsuishikari is the place where Sakhalin Ainu were relocated. In 1875, Sakhalin became a Russian territory through the Treaty of Saint Petersburg. Therefore the Japanese government required Sakhalin Ainu to emigrate to Japan. As a result, more than 800 people were made to migrate to Tsuishikari. Dixon visited them in 1882 and recorded their lifestyle and collected their folkcraft. There are very few records about the Tsuishikari Ainu culture, thus his work is considered valuable.
