Abstract

The male and female relationship in Papua New Guinea and the Massim Region described in ethnographies appears eccentric in the sense that it inordinately emphasizes the male dominance which controls the menacing power of the female. However, the fact that to find any attempt on the part of either gender to overwhelm the other is bound to fail turns our eyes toward the symmetrical character of the two genders. That the male has non-female elements while the female has non-male elements (and vice versa) leads the two to form reciprocal relations. From the viewpoint of male and female symmetry, this paper attempts to unravel the primordial twist between a kin group and a couple, the public sphere and the private/sexual realm that human societies have been coping with.
