Description
Theodicy is a theory that purports to defend the omnipotence, omniscience, and goodness of God while also explaining the existence of evil in this world. This lecture examines the strategies Leibniz employed to carry out this task and summarizes two of the main theodicies in the contemporary English-speaking world, i. e., "free will defense" and "Irenaean theodicy." Weber, on the other hand, used the term "theodicy" to denote the answer that a religion gives to the problem of "the imperfection of the world" and compared world religions by examining their respective theodicies. This lecture concludes with some remarks on Jesus and Shinran regarding how they transcended the human psychological need for theodicy.
