説明
This paper discusses the reception of knowledge about “same -sex love” in the 1920s of China. Since the start of the 20th century onwards, Western knowledge and concepts about sexuality were introduced and translated to China via Japan, among which the concept of homosexuality raised by Krafft-Ebing and Edward Carpenter played an important role in shaping the perceptions of Chinese intellectuals. Quite in contrast to its popular reception in Japan, the Chinese translation of Krafft -Ebing’s Psychopathia Sexualis in 1906 did not resonate much among local intellectuals. Carpenter’s theory of “Intermediate Sex” was a totally difference case: after having been repeatedly translated from its Japanese version in the 1920s, it generated much wider public attention. By examining The Debate on tongxing’ai (published in 1930), this paper argues that Chinese intellectuals viewed homosexuality as a social issue rather than a medical problem of sexual identity. The introduction of Carpenter's theory turned the concept of " Intermediate Sex " into a weapon to fight against existing abstinent rituals in modern China, as well as an expression of comradeship and solidarity.
