Abstract

In the Western intellectual tradition, “casuistry” has been notorious for its abuse since the 17th century. Currently, it is considered as a viable method for applied philosophy. And it has another virtue, that is, a compromise attitude, but we surmise that the fact is less known. In this paper, as the title shows, we ask a question “Is casuistry a method or an attitude?” Considering casuistry from a historical point of views, we shall answer the question in the final section. At any rate, the purpose of this article is to enrich a concept of casuistry for its further applications to practical or applied philosophy.
