The Itoshima earthquake (M 5.8) of August 12, 1898 in Fukuoka Prefecture was only one known damaging earthquake in this region in a historical time. We collected local material as much as possible and reexamined the nature and distribution of the damage. The newspapers issued immediately after the earthquake were used mainly for this study as well as the official reports. The main effects of the earthquake were the damage to houses and the ground cracking with the extrusion of sand and water. The damaged area is divisible into the following four areas according to the degree of damage. The "highest" damaging area, including Koganemaru, Motooka, and Imajuku, with the JMA scale intensity of 5-stronger, or locally 6. The "moderate" damaging area, including Susenji, Hatae, Maebaru, and Mizusaki-Imaide- Tajiri-Taromaru, corresponding to 5-stronger on the JMA intensity scale. The "minor" damaging area, including Imazu, Shito, Ikeda, Baba, Tsuwazaki, Hatsu, Ito Village, Kafuri, Kitazaki Vill., Sakurai Vill., Nogita Vill., Kofuji Vill., and Keya Vill., corresponding to the JMA scale intensity of 5-weaker. The practically non-damaging area of Ikisan Vill., Fukae Vill., and Nagaito Vill., corresponding to the JMA scale of 4. Extrusion of sand and water due to liquefaction was remarkable on the Itoshima lowland lower than 5m above sea-level. The meizoseismic area of the Itoshima earthquake extended in a narrow belt trending east-west from Koganemaru to Imajuku, suggesting that the subsurface seismogenic fault lay also in the east-west. However, no geological surface indication for it has been found. The Itoshima earthquake of 1898 is a past example useful for the mitigation of hazard due to a similar earthquake which may occur in this region for the future.
