Abstract

This study aims to apply a theoretical framework for analyzing contemporary media culture based on social systems theory to the specific case of how a popular music singer, MORITAKA Chisato, gained her reputation as a star musician. Through this study, the author aims to show where the creativeness of media culture originated, as well as to examine the effectiveness of the theoretical framework for an analysis based on social systems theory. The singer launched her career in 1986. After a period of obscurity, she began to gain public attention as a "parody" of idle popular singers with a showy costume and unique lyrics around 1990. Contemporary media culture can be conceptualized as a complex combination of three social systems : the "creation," "business," and "consumption" systems. The business system initially unsuccessfully attempted to promote her as a normal idle singer. The creation system and the singer were unsatisfied with performing as a typical idle singer. Hence, she attempted to create her own style as a performer. While her appearance, wearing short skirts emphasizing her beautiful legs, attracted significant attention, especially from boys, an "interpretive community" which interpreted her performance and appearance as a "parody" of typical idle singers emerged from the consumption system. The success of MORITAKA can be explained by the dynamism and conflicts caused by the interactions of different social systems.
