Abstract

This study aimed to determine the optimal duration of wet and cold storage treatment of the seeds of Prunus speciosa, P. incisa, and P. lannesiana ‘Kawazu-zakura’ that would yield maximal growth. In addition, we aimed to determine the optimal time for dormant branch cutting of P. speciosa using pruned branches that would result in maximal growth. We measured the germination rate and tree height of the three aforementioned cherry tree species after subjecting their seeds to wet and cold storage treatment at 4 ℃ under the dark. In addition, we measured the leafing rate and root callus formation rate of the pruned branches of P. speciosa. The highest germination rate and tree height were obtained after approximately three months of wet and cold storage treatment. The leafing rate and root callus formation rate of pruned branches of P. speciosa were the highest in January and February. Thus, the seeds of these three cherry tree species should be subjected to wet and cold storage treatment for three months to maximize growth. Furthermore, the pruned branches of P. speciosa should be grown in January and February to optimize growth.
