説明
In the period of about one year long between autumn, 1953 and autumn, 1954, forty-seven cases of the sudden fatalities of uncertain etiology occurred among cattle in a certain area near Osaka City. The lethal agent in these cattle was thought to be sodium monofluoroacetate (NaFlAc), and therefore the investigation was conducted along this line. 1. As the result of flood disaster due to a typhoon in autumn, 1953, a vast amount of waste water was carried away from a NaFlAc manufacturing factory which lies in that area. 2. NaFlAc was detected at a level of 1.45 p.p.m. in this waste water, which resulted in the death of dogs by the oral administration at a minimum dose of 15.0cc. per kilogram of canine body weight (NaFlAc 0.021mg./kg.). 3. From the fact that the symptoms of the fatal dogs coincided with the typical signs observed in NaFlAc poisoning, and that accumulation of citric acid in tissues of these dogs was demonstrated, it was evident that the fatalities in these dogs were caused by NaFlAc poisoning. 4. Three normal calves died as the result of the oral administration of NaFlAc at a minimum dose of 0.2-0.3mg. per kilogram of body weight. 5. The dysfunction in the heart muscle of these calves was presented by the electrocardiographic examination. This finding coincided well with that observed in the histopathological examination on the same organ. 6. The accumulation of citric acid was detected in tissue of these calves. In addition, NaFlAc was recovered from several organs, rumen juice, urine, et cetera. 7. NaFlAc was recovered from formol-fixed brains and hearts of six cattle which died previously. 8. From the fact that the symptoms of a cattle which died suddenly in October, 1955, coincided with those observed in the spontaneous cases of 46 cattle and in the oexperimental cases of 3 calves receiving NaFlAc, and that it was demonstrated that citric acid was accumulated in tissues and NaFlAc was recovered from the organs, it was evident that the fatality in this case in cattle was caused by NaFlAc poisoning. From these findings it is concluded that the spontaneous cases of the sudden fatalities were caused by NaFlAc poisoning.
