Description
This paper aims to describe a case of a film-making workshop, participatory video, that was held at the Bakas' association in March 2011. The Baka people living in the rainforest of the eastern province of Cameroon are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain their traditional lifestyle because of logging, mining, and the regulation of hunting. In this situation, the Baka urgently need to insist on their rights. This project provides film-making workshops for the Baka based at the Bakas' association and makes it possible for them to represent their culture and insist on their rights through visual media. The purpose of this study is to examine the utilization of visual media in order to promote and protect the Bakas’ culture through making and producing films. In addition, this study aims to construct a model for the indigenous movement by utilizing visual media based on collaborative film-making among the Bakas’ associations, visual anthropologists, Cameroonian researchers, and filmmakers.
