Description

The Emperor Shirakawa was the 72nd Emperor in Japan. He composed 28 waka poems in his life. In this paper I consider each of the 28 waka poems he wrote in turn, finding out about when and where it was composed, about the people he associated with socially. He wrote 13 waka poems at the time of the Emperor, and 6 waka poems at the retired Emperor, and 3 waka poems at the time of the abdicated Emperor who has joined a Buddhist order. 6 waka poems whose year of composition are unknown. By using the Ruidaisho, the year of waka poems written by him that could not be explained until now became clear. Therefore it turns out that the Emperor Shirakawa wrote many waka poems during his reign. There were three people who were on good terms with the Emperor Shirakawa at the waka party. One was Fujiwara no Morozane, who was a kanpaku (chief adviser to the Emperor).Another two were Minamoto no Tsunenobu and Oe Masafusa who served the Emperor.
