Description

By providing information on the potential risk of traffic accidents, i.e., “accident risk,” it is expected that the safety of individual trips will be improved and accidents will be reduced by shifting demand to safer routes. As accident risk indicators that have the potential to provide road users with incentives for route guidance, in addition to accident occurrence risk information, “accident encounter risk,” which indicates the likelihood of encountering an accident scene while driving on an expressway, and “accident loss risk,” which is the amount of loss that may be incurred while driving on an expressway, are included. In addition to the risk information of accidents occurring, two indicators have been proposed: “accident encounter risk,” which indicates the possibility of encountering an accident site while driving on the expressway, and “accident loss risk,” which is the amount of loss that may occur while driving on the expressway. In this study, we evaluate the expected effects of route guidance and accident reduction when these different quality accident risk indicators are provided to road users. Specifically, we analyzed the effects of providing various accident risk indicators on the route selection rate of road users using a route selection model that takes accident risk information into account for the NEXCO West network with route selection, and quantitatively demonstrated the accident reduction effect of providing accident risk information.
