本稿は接触節 (ゼロ関係詞節) についての問題点あるいは特徴をさまざまな視点から検討したものである。まず, 接触節は古くからある英語であり, それを必ずしも関係代名詞の省略とは見ない, という考え方について述べている。その後に, 改めてそれらの問題点あるいは特徴について, 次のような点を明らかにしている。 (1) 名詞句の連続という構造上の特徴はあとに従属節が続く合図であり, 接触節と先行詞の間にはなんらのポーズもなければ, 目立ったピッチの変動もない。 (2) 接触節での主語には人称代名詞がきわめて多用されている。 (3) 接触節では伝達すべき情報は旧情報並であり, 情報量は極めて少ない。また, そのために接触節をなしている部分の語数については2-4語であり・きわめて少ない構成をしている。接触節は,つまるところ,直感的に理解できるようなレベルのものであり,詳しい関係代名詞などの合図などは不要なほどにやさしい構造, 換言すれば, 情報の少ない構造のものなのである。すなわち,接触節は情報量をいわばぎりぎりのところまで抑制したものであり,すべてがそのいわば「スリム化の方向」に向かっているものと考えてよいであろう。

This paper is intended as a study of contact clauses in English. And so, we discussed the constructions from various points of view. Firstly we pointed out the fact that the constructions are very old in the English language, and that they are not the expressions in which the necessary objective relative pronouns are omitted. Secondly, we revealed in the main some characteristics of the constructions, which are as follows. (1) What is meant by the two consecutive NP's, which are composed of the antecedent and the subject of the contact clause? The use of the two NP's can signal the fact that the preceding NP in the sentence is followed by a subordinate clause or something. It is, also, to be noted that there are no pauses or changes of pitch between the antecedents and the contact clauses. (2) Most of the subjects of contact clauses are personal pronouns. (3) The amount of information that contact clauses may convey are very scarce, and the number of.words that make up contact clauses are generally very few, i.e. they usually consist of 2-4 words., Contact clauses are, after all, one of the constructions of post-modification that can be understood intuitively in a way. And this construction can be considered to be an expression that is slimmed down extremely in terms of the amount of information it conveys.
