Buber's philosophy of dialogue and his exegetical works on the Bible are both based upon his theory of linguistic interpretation. For him, biblical language is composed of three elements: the spoken word, the written word, and the word of interpretation. These are, respectively, the voice of God, the text of the Scripture, and the language of translation. This is the linguistic continuum that establishes the biblical language as the medium between the reader and the text's original spokenness. The Bible is the given text that is written in human language. The divine instructions can also be transmitted by the prophets. They transmit the divine messages through their visions and dreams and sometimes through their own allegories. Buber points out the problem of false prophecy through the example of Jeremiah 28 and the misunderstanding of prophets by the interpretation of I Samuel 15. To overcome these obstacles, Buber explains that the reader must penetrate to the text's original spokenness. This responsibility is the real response to the address of God's voice. It is fulfilled by the reader's receptive I-Thou attitude toward the text, an attitude based upon trust and loyalty. The original spoken message of God can become actual out of the potential written text. This actuality occurs only through the reader's dialogical encounter of spoken word. Buber established his linguistic philosophy of Thou through the hermeneutics of biblical language.
