抄録

In view of the fact that so far few have tried to analyse the concept of nature which is so often used in Chinese and Japanese literatures, and yet whose meaning is so ambivalent, the author felt a need to scrutinize it in some detail. He classifies various meanings of the word into three groups with further subdivisions. In the first place there is a concept of Nature (1) in the sense of that which produces and controls itself without any external cause, (2) Nature in the sense that which is opposed to human activity or artificiality, which conception of Nature sometimes goes even further to deny and eliminate them from it, and (3) Nature in the sense that which includes human activity or artificiality, and stands in harmony with them. Now the second sense above can, again, be divided as follows: (a) Nature as the totality of that which is controlled by the laws inherent in itself, (b) Nature as synonym of destiny, (c) Nature as is understood by Jōdobuddhists, (d) Nature as basic human nature. The third sense may be either of following three, (a) Nature in the sense of making human activity conform to Nature, (b) Nature formed through habit, and (c) Natural (Nature) in the sense of being able to act freely and without restrain as a result of having perfected one's nature through diligent effort.
