Abstract

This research note includes the primary data for a Japan–France comparative study of industry-government-academia collaboration clusters, focusing on the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (PACA) region in France. The PACA region includes many major cities such as Marseille, the second largest city in France ; Aix-en-Provence ; Nice ; Cannes ; and Avignon. This research note focuses on the Perfumes, Aromatics, and Medicinal Plants Cluster (PASS), which is centered in the city of Grasse, and the French "associations" around the University of Aix-Marseille. It effectively promotes sustainability and the development of new applications and products through the use of technology. The Aix-Marseille area observes the phenomenon of altruism, the spirit of solidarity, and the integration of French "associations" with public institutions, which has adopted the open-minded mechanism of "fablab," which began at MIT.
