Abstract

〔Aims〕This study aimed to clarify the usages of nursing students’ communication skills through role playing with the simulated patient at the data gathering stage in nursing care planning. The method involved the conversation contents with simulated patient.

〔Methods〕The subjects were fourth-year five students. We analyzed communication scene between the students and the simulated patient and the usages of each skill from the verbatim.

〔Results〕Of all the communication skills used by nursing students, relationship-building skills were used in 27.3−55.4% and information-gathering skills in 44.6−72.7%. The therapeutic techniques used by nursing students were limited, such as [acceptance] and [search]. Students’ use of non-therapeutic skills were characteristics of each topic and student.

〔Conclusions〕Information gathering skills were relatively common among the communication skills used by nursing students, and the results suggest that students are interested in understanding the simulated patient because they were in the information gathering stage. It is suggested that the background to the use of non-therapeutic skills for students is that students are not good at showing their feelings and thoughts, thinking to organize information, and clarifying the intention of conversation. It is important for teachers to have the opportunity to confirm with students their intention to collect information in advance.
