Abstract

<p>〔Aims〕To reveal the difficulties faced by new graduate nurses working in acute care hospital in performing their duties, their actions to overcome the difficulties, and support for continuous employment.</p><p>〔Methods〕Semi-structured interviews and qualitative descriptive analysis were conducted with eight new graduate nurses.</p><p>〔Results〕The difficulties faced by new graduate nurses consisted of the following four categories: Insufficient practical skills in acute care hospital, Negative image for their own acts, Job-related physical changes, and Difficulty in communication in the organization. The actions for overcoming the difficulties consisted of the following three categories: Action to resolve the difficult situation, Coming to terms with the situation, and Acceptance of the situation leading to improved motivation.</p><p>〔Conclusions〕Facing the difficulties on the knowledge and skills necessary for acute care nursing practice, and interpersonal relations, the participants took the actions to resolve the difficult situation for overcoming the difficulties, while the actions to come to terms with the situation were observed. New graduate nurses working in acute care hospital need support for their psychological stability and promotion of their professional socialization as nurses.</p>
