It is a long time since we heard the term "Understanding foreign cultures". All things foreign seem to be connected with their own cultures, but we have often found them superficial in its own culture when we studied them closely. However it is effective and enlightening to study a language and read its masterpieces, if we want to be involed in some culture better and more deeply. In excellent literary works, something total or comprehensive is shown precisely and elaborately. Japan or the Japanese language is well embodied in The Makioka's sisters by Jun'ichiro Tanizaki. Likewise we see many, unique English modes of life in David Copperfield by Charles Dickens, an English national writer. When reading David Copperfield, we feel to be faced with English-ness in various ways. It is a world where we could enjoy and indulge ourselves freely.
