Description

Non-clinical safety assessment using in vitro cell culture models is crucial for drug discovery and development, serving a variety of purposes that include compound screening, mechanistic analysis. In addition, it is important to apply human cell assays for improving accuracy of clinical safety prediction and overcoming species differences of toxicity. However, because conventional cell sources including human cell lines and primary cells have some limitations such as insufficient functions, difficulties for use as routine cell sources, and lot-to-lot variations, obtaining an appropriate human cell source is one of the key factors for in vitro research. Human iPS cells are expected to overcome these issues because of their proliferative ability and pluripotency, and the cells have been applied to drug research and development in recent years.

This presentation will introduce the activities to apply human iPS cells to in vitro toxicity assessment in Chugai and discuss the perspective of their potential values in non-clinical pharmaceutical research.
