Abstract

To investigate the time course of the effects of therapeutic ultrasound in different frequencies (3 MHz and 1 MHz) on the shear elastic modulus of the upper trapezius muscle. A total of 20 healthy young men volunteered to participate in this study. The shear modulus of the upper trapezius muscle in the dominant arms was measured as an index of muscle stiffness using ultrasound shear-wave elastography with a frequency of 1 MHz or 3 MHz, duty cycle of 100%, and intensity of 2.0 W/cm2 for 10 min. The shear modulus measurements were obtained before and every 2 min after the therapeutic ultrasound intervention. The shear modulus obtained 4 min after was significantly lower than that taken before the therapeutic ultrasound. However, no significant differences were observed between 1 MHz and 3 MHz frequency of therapeutic ultrasound. Therapeutic ultrasound for more than 4 min effectively decreased the shear modulus of the upper trapezius muscle, regardless of frequency.
