Abstract

PocketChem BG is a portable blood glucose meter that has not been approved for use in newborns because of a lack of evidence for its accuracy in samples from this population. We investigated the correlation of measurements between PocketChem BG and two other blood glucose meters that have been approved for use in neonates. We included 100 newborns delivered at a tertiary perinatal care center, with written informed consent obtained from their guardians. We used three measurements from PocketChem BG at a time. The mean value of the measurements was compared with that concurrently obtained using the other two models. We found that the difference among the three blood glucose meters was within 2.0%, which met the criteria of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guideline POCT12-A3. PocketChem BG is considered to have the same performance as the other two models in blood samples from neonates.
