Description

The present work attempts to elucidate the mechanism of quenching processes during spray cooling. Water spray cooling tests were conducted with heated iron disks at system pressures of 0.1 MPa–0.5 MPa. Extra care was taken to minimize the effect of surface oxidization. We demonstrated that the quenching temperature can be predicted using a mechanistic model, considering the forces acting at the interface between the droplet and the vapor film underneath it. We also modelled heat transfer from the surface to the droplet, extended it to the spray level, and simulated thermal histories until the onset of quenching.
