Description

Nurses must conduct various types of interviews with patients in many clinical scenarios. Intake interviews, the first interviews with patients, are important for clinical staff in collecting information about cases. However, there are no conceptual structure for nursing interviews, and the process depends on the expertise of each nurse. This study presents a conceptual structure for intake interviews by nurses in emergency settings using Endsley model. We used an acute hospitalization scenario as the case and interviewed seven nurses, each with two or more years of experience. The mean age of participants was 32.1±7.6 years. Their clinical experience in years was 10.6±7.2 years, and length of assignment to their department was 3.7±1.8 years. The nursing intake interview process for acute hospitalization was divided into five categories: cognitive information, recognizing gaps in information, prediction of care needed by patients, confirmation of patients' need for patient-centered care, and identification of the care process from experimental knowledge. Nurses used situational awareness, affected by both their own perception and individual experiences, as their mental model to conduct interviews within a limited time.
