Abstract

A 6-year-old girl collapsed and experienced seizures. Her seizures were successfully suppressed with the use of lacosamide (LCM). However, she had a hyperthymic temperament sometimes, such as laughing excessively at trivial matters. The generalized spike and wave complexes seen before LCM administration were extremely aggravated, and slow waves appeared in background activity on electroencephalography (EEG). When we changed from LCM to Valproic acid, the psychiatric symptoms immediately disappeared and the EEG improved. Therefore, when psychiatric symptoms are seen after LCM administration, EEG is strongly recommended.
