Lake Biwa is a tectonic lake. The lake was formed by repeated fault activity (such as a large earthquake). There is spring water at the bottom of Lake Biwa. In the western part of Lake Biwa, there are the the Biwako-seigan fault and the Hanaore Fault. The western part of Lake Biwa is a resort area that is easily accessible from the Kansai region.
