Abstract

In this study, we conducted the lithic use-wear analysis (high-power approach) to reveal use of stone tools from the Kafukai 2 site, Hokkaido, Northern Japan. Materials examined in this study are forty-three chipped stone tools and a polished stone adze preserved in Hokkaido University Museum. Artifacts are mainly assigned to the Susuya Culture (the Late Epi-Jomon or the initial phase of the Okhotsk Culture) although several artifacts of the Jomon and the Middle-Late Okhotsk Cultures are also included in the collection. As a result of the analysis, use-wear polish and striations could be seen on an end scraper and two side scrapers, whereas no use-wear polish distributed on arrowheads and points. Types of use-wear polish (E2, OB-E, and OB-I types) suggest that an end scraper and side scrapers were used for tanning hide. While there was no microwear on the edge of a stone adze, it had the use-wear polish closely related to wood-working on the surface of basal portion. This is the hafting trace suggesting that the stone adze was used for processing wood in combination with a wooden folded haft. Generally, use of stone tools from this site is common with that of the Jomon, Epi-Jomon, and Okhotsk Cultures, confirming that similar prehistoric stone tool use can be seen in remote islands in Northern Hokkaido as well.
