Abstract

In this study, we depicted the olfactory nerve in mice, marmosets, and humans using high-field magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor tractography. By analyzing the olfactory nerve trajectories, the topographical correlation between the olfactory epithelium and the olfactory bulb was visualized, which we proposed as the "olfactory nerve map." The olfactory nerve maps showed the preservation of the dorsal-ventral and medial-lateral axes between the olfactory epithelium and olfactory bulb. This tractography method has the potential for clinical application in the future to evaluate olfactory dysfunction and preoperative evaluation.
