Abstract

The aim of this investigation was to examine relationship among end-of-work fatigue (EWF), habitual physical activity (HPA) and physical fitness (PF) in nursery school teachers. EWF and HPA were checked by use of the questionnaire method and six indices of PF were measured for 123 female nursery teachers aged 20-57 years (mean age 37.1±SD 9.7 yr). Distribution of subjects concerning EWF and HPA, which were divided into three levels for analyses, respectively. Six indices of PF tests concerning grip strength, back strength, arm flexion power, leg extension power, sit-up and estimated maximal oxygen uptake were performed. The group with higher frequency of HPA was correlated with a lower degree of EWF (Spearman p = - 0.25, p < 0.01). The group with the highest EWF level had the lowest back strength and sit-up frequency on average and significant difference (p < 0.05) in back strength was found between the highest EWF group (73.7 ± 17.1 kg) and the intermediate groups (82.9 ± 19.4 kg). However, there were no significant differences in all PF averages among three HPA levels. Back strength is the key to lowering fatigue in nursery school teachers. Thus, habitual physical activity aiming at the training of trunk muscles might have an effect on lowering the levels of EWF among female nursery school teachers.
