The purpose of this study was to clarify the nature and processes of “judgment” and “response”in first aid to improve the practical ability of yogo teachers in first aid. Semi-structured interviews with 10yogo teachers as study participants were conducted, and cases in which the intuitive response of the yogo teacher giving first aid was sound were qualitatively analyzed based on perceptual clues.

In the results, judgment in first aid consisted of judging the urgency of the problem, intuition, characteristics of the child, information gathering, factors that facilitate decision making and factors that hinder decision making. Judging the urgency of the problem involved confirmation of the physiological assessment; intuition involved pattern recognition; characteristics of the child involved being unprejudiced and closely examining the complaint; information gathering involved confirming the history of symptoms, confirming medical history, gathering information systematically, and observation; factors that facilitate decision making involved remembering one’s own experience, deepening knowledge of injuries and diseases, and sharing experiences with others; and factors that hindered decision making involved lack of confidence and haste. The yogo teacher’s intuition involved recognition of important patterns from similar situations and differences in the appearance of the child, not a sixth sense linked to the response, which thereafter influences decision making. In order to apply intuition, it seems necessary to heighten the perceptual skill of inferring clues for pattern recognition. Response consisted of readiness and evaluation. Readiness involved standards for calling an ambulance, accountability to administrators, cooperation within the school, regional cooperation and communication with the parental guardian; evaluation involved the yogo teacher, physician, parental guardian,(school)administrator and the child. The method of evaluation was feedback by the yogo teacher’s own subjective view limited to the experience, and the yogo teacher acquires knowledge by a process of accumulating experience. Improvement of the practice of first aid by yogo teachers will require professional awareness of the judgment process, and systematization of the knowledge to allow it to be consciously studied.
