Motivation is a noteworthy factor relating to behavior modification in establishing healthy eating habits. The aim of this study was to clarify the relationship between the motivation for healthy eating in university students and their childhood eating behaviors. It was hypothesized that autonomous motivation for healthy eating habits relates to eating behaviors in childhood, such as active involvement in eating habits, taking enjoyment in food, and having a healthy diet.

A total of 322 university students (183 males, 18.5±0.8 years; 139 females. 18.6±0.9 years) participated in the study. Students indicated their motivations for healthy eating and their childhood eating habits. The results showed that autonomous motivation for healthy eating habits in adolescence relates to childhood eating habits. Results also indicated that a healthy diet and positive atmosphere around the dining table fostered the motivation for healthy eating. In addition, participating in the cooking of meals appeared to foster autonomous motivation. Furthermore, simple and easy meals and a negative atmosphere around the dining table are likely to reduce autonomous motivation.
