Abstract

The purpose of this study was to clarify the process by which young graduate from universities in Okinawa decide to work in the hospitality industry, particularly in the hotel industry. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with young interviewees, and the data obtained were analyzed using a "modified grounded theory approach <M-GTA>" . As a result, the following categories were generated for employment in the lodging industry: "perception of tourism," "constraint to employment in the lodging industry," "self-awareness," and "employment decision. Also, it can be clarified that the category such as "Career readiness for employment in the lodging industry" is related to internship programs offered by universities and industries, and experiences about customer service experience from part-time job, and personal discipline. Furthermore, the study shows the different tendency with respect to "vicarious experience" and "verbal persuasion" <e.g., Hackett & Betz, 1981>.
