Description
François Dagognet was a philosopher associated with the French epistemology known as the philosophy of the history of science. The purpose of this paper is to compare Dagognet with his predecessors, Bachelard and Canguilhem. The key concept is teratology. Bachelard and Canguilhem were interested in monstrosity because of the question of norms, and Canguilhem in particular researched teratology in his study of the history of science. Similarly, Dagognet focused on teratology and evaluated Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, the founder of this field. Unlike his predecessors, however, Dagognet did not discuss the issue of norms by dismissing the dualism of values. For Dagogent, teratology is referenced as a way to assert his philosophy of surface.
