Description
In Japanese Sign Language, a variety of expressions, which literally designate changes (e.g. growing taller), are also used to refer to properties (e.g. being tall). These expressions can be viewed as metonymic, in that they are based on the contiguity between changes and properties. This paper shows that this use of metonymy is motivated by the fact that Japanese Sign Language uses the visual-manual modality to convey meaning. It is further argued that subjectification (Langacker 1998) is a factor in these metonymic expressions.
